This page contains materials from our OLA 2025 Annual Conference presentation, 'AI/AI@OSU: Academic Integrity and Artificial Intelligence at Oklahoma State University.' Below you'll find our presentation outline, slides, and supplementary resources to help you implement these concepts at your own institution. The Hansel and Gretel imagery throughout emerged from Dr. Megan Ruby's suggestion of 'leaving a trail of breadcrumbs' as a metaphor for transparent AI use—a perfect visual representation of making AI processes visible. All visuals were generated using Midjourney, with prompts developed through Perplexity AI, exemplifying our approach to transparent AI collaboration. Our contact information is provided below. We welcome your questions, insights, and stories about implementing these frameworks in your context.

Description:

In addressing academic integrity and the use of artificial intelligence at Oklahoma State University, we're adopting an approach that moves beyond traditional, prohibitive frameworks. Instead of relying solely on moral imperatives, we frame academic integrity as "playing by the rules of the game you're in." This perspective better acknowledges the diverse cultural understandings of knowledge sharing and the evolving landscape of information use in the digital age.

Our approach emphasizes transparency and visibility, drawing inspiration from John Hattie's concept of visible learning. By making the learning process and the use of AI tools more transparent, we believe students can better understand and adhere to academic integrity principles. Our instructional initiatives are structured around seven key aspects:

  1. Empowerment through AI
  2. Ethical use and transparency
  3. Critical evaluation of AI-generated content
  4. Cultural contexts and academic integrity
  5. Clear rules of engagement
  6. Transparency in sharing the work behind the work
  7. Responsible AI use

Each aspect fosters active learning and reflection, encouraging students to engage critically with AI tools while maintaining academic standards. By focusing on transparency and sharing the "work behind the work," we aim to shift the conversation from prohibition to empowerment, preparing students for a future where AI is an integral part of academic and professional life. This approach not only enhances students' understanding of academic integrity but also equips them with skills to navigate the ethical use of AI in their academic journey and beyond.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Analyze the shift from traditional, prohibitive frameworks of academic integrity to a "rules of the game" approach that emphasizes transparency and empowerment in the context of AI use.
  2. Apply the seven-aspect design of AI literacy and academic integrity to develop strategies for promoting responsible AI use and visible learning in academic settings.
